Provides physical support to assist patients to perform activities of daily living such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising. Answers call lights or intercom systems to determine and assist patients with needs. Document or otherwise report observations of patient behavior, complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses. Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates, and food and fluid intake and output, as directed. Attends shift report and be knowledgeable about the needs and care of the patients. Attends company and departmental in-service meetings, resident coordination meetings, trainings, etc. Maintains safe and clean work area and adheres to company safety standards. Complies with Infection Control, Universal Precautions, and OSHA standards for healthcare professionals. Maintains positive professional relationships and rapport with co-workers, patients, family members, and facility personnel. Conducts job responsibilities in accordance with company standards, policies, procedures, applicable federal and state laws, and applicable professional standards. Although the primary function is to collect blood and other samples for testing, the job begins at the first contact with the patient. Lab procedures can be a distressing prospect for most patients and the phlebotomist must be able to put the patient at ease while simultaneously prepping the patient with tourniquets and disinfectant, and then drawing the blood as painlessly as possible. It is also the Phlebotomist’s responsibility to accurately label each sample making sure it contains the correct patient identifiers and tests required. The phlebotomist must be prepared to work with a variety of complications that may arise from patient conditions or allergies and be able to adapt their procedure and equipment to each unique situation. The phlebotomist may also provide additional help in other areas of the laboratory including answering phones and general customer service.
